LOLA F. (CORKY) ALTENBURG MRS. LOLA FAY (CORKY) ALTENBURG, age 82 of Wharton died Wednesday, June 13, 2012 in a Houston Hospital following an extended illness. She was born on October 12, 1929 in Liberty, TX the daughter of the late Fred Terry Ball and Mettie Lambert Ball. Corky attended public school in Liberty Texas and was the Drum Major of the Liberty High Panther Band and was a graduate of Liberty High School. She attended Baylor University and received her BBA degree and was Drum Major of the Golden Girls Baylorettes. She married Waymond Henry Altenburg, Jr. on June 5, 1951 in Liberty, TX. She was a former resident of Encinitas, CA while Waymond served in the Military service. They moved to Beaumont, TX and she taught the fifth and sixth grade for a number of years and also owned a dress shop. They then moved to Houston and then to Wharton in 1976. She worked as a Real Estate Sales Agent for the Harrell-McElroy Co. and later for Coldwell-Banker for twenty six years until her retirement in August of 2011. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wharton, the Bridge Club, the Sewing Club, played piano for the Wharton Lions Club and also served as the Lions Club Sweetheart. She and Waymond were married for sixty one years and shared a beautiful life together. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Emmett Ball. Following Cremation, Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Rev. Meredith Wende officiating. Survivors include her husband, Waymond H. Altenburg, Jr. of Wharton; sister, Lois Mae Nail of San Antonio, TX; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, JoRene Altenburg of Boling and Joann and Dr. Don Gloff of Clifton, TX.; nieces and husbands; Melanie Rueter and Rodney of Clifton, Becky Griffin and Mike of Poetry, Cheryl Ball of Mineola,and nephews and wives, Greg Gloff and Angela of Clifton, Steve Nail and Joyce of San Antonio, Jada and Travis Seppenen of Huntsville, and Chuck Altenburg of Wharton. Several great nieces and nephews, Ben, Alex,and Zach Gloff, Kayla and Alyssa Rueter all of Clifton, Julie and Sam Seppenen of Huntsville, Jamie and Jeff Sanders of Lindale, Dorie and Anna Beth Ball of Austin, and Nolan Getty of Tyler and two great great nieces and one great great nephew also survive. Honorary Pallbearers will be; Greg Gloff, Rodney Rueter, Dr. Don Gloff, Steve Nail, Chuck Altenburg, Travis Seppenen, Wayne Adam, Tom Miller, Richard Arnold, and all of her many close friends and neighbors. In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to First United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, TX 77488. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
