Ms. Elena Ann Pool, age 62 of Wharton died Thursday, August 2, 2012 in a Houston Hospital following an extended illness. She was born on August 30, 1949 in Houston, TX the daughter of Bingley Fulton Martin and Esther Mae Brown Martin. Ms. Pool has been a resident of Wharton since 1993 and was Christian by Faith. She worked for many years in office supply sales. She was the very first female dairy cattle rancher in California. She enjoyed gardening, music and helping friends and neighbors. She was a very giving and loving person and was a life-long Democrat. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Johnson in 1999 and a brother, Murphy (Tiny) Doherty in 2009. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Survivors include her partner of thirty-three years, Mary McDonnell of Wharton; her daughter, Shonda Collins of Houston; sister, Hedy Shafranski of Katy, TX; grandchildren, Alexander Gonzalez, Rain Johnson, Brett Johnson and Avery Juarez; great grandchildren, Jordan Gonzalez and Shawn Gonzalez. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Pallbearers were; Alexander Gonzalez, Tawana Rowghani, Ariah Rowghani, Michele Dominguez, Danielle Dominguez and Janelle Parsons.
