Mrs. Eugenia (Janie) Mata, age 84 of Hungerford died Saturday, August 4, 2012 in a Sugar Land Hospital following an extended illness. She was born on November 11, 1927 in Wharton County, TX the daughter of the late Gregorio Valdez and Juanna Tamez Valdez. Mrs. Mata was a life-long resident of Hungerford and a member of Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. She married Saturnino Mata on May 1, 1949 in Wharton and he preceded her in death on March 17, 2009. She was also preceded in death by sons Robert Mata in 1996 and Gilbert Mata in 2010, a sister, Sara Lopez and two brothers, Jasper Valdez, Sr. and Isaac Valdez and her daughter in law, Trixie Mata in 1996. She was the Dietary Supervisor for Wharton Nursing and Rehab in Wharton for forty years until her retirement in 2006. She was a graduate of Wharton County Junior College. Her hobbies including dominos, bingo, going to casinos, cooking for family and friends and volunteering at church bazaars and Avalon Nursing Home. Friends may call for visitation starting at 6:00 pm TODAY at the Wharton Funeral Home and a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM TONIGHT at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and a Funeral Mass Will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Gabriel Espinosa officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Hungerford. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane & Mario Sanchez of El Campo; son & daughters-in-law, Anthony & Hilda Mata of Stafford, TX and Darla Mata; sister, Lupe Mata of Wharton, fifteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Grandsons Anthony Mata, Jr, Ross Mata, Corey Mata, Christopher Mata, Gregory Tinkham, Matthew Sanchez, Robert Richard and Great Grandsons Christopher Mata and Ricky Palomarez. In support of her team the Dallas Cowboys, wear your jersey/T-shirt.
