Eleanor Hudgins Locke was born in Hungerford, Texas, to Ella and Walter J. Hudgins on May 29, 1919. She grew up in Hungerford on the J.D. Hudgins Ranch. After graduating from Wharton High School in 1937, she attended Texas Women’s University in Denton, graduating in 1941 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics. She taught high school in Conroe for two years before marrying Leon Locke in 1943 and starting a family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Leon Locke, her parents, Ella and Walter Hudgins, infant twin Evelyn Hudgins , brother Edgar Hudgins, sister Janie Mangum, sister Nettie Hudgins and, and son-in-law Joel Glickman. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Coleman and Regina Locke of Wharton, daughter Jo Ann Glickman of Austin, son and daughter-in-law Marshall and Melissa Locke of Hungerford, and daughter and son-in-law Lynette and John Lackey of Brazoria. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren - Kris Walters and husband Matt, Scott Pattison, Roger Lackey and wife Laura, Conan Glickman, Elizabeth Hoskins and husband Tito, Mark Lackey and wife Kelly, Laura Field and husband Tom, Brian Lackey and wife Kim, Gayle DeBerry and husband Drew, John Coleman Locke and wife Salina, Mason Locke and Miles Locke, 21 great-grandchildren, and a large extended family. Eleanor, affectionately known as “Nannie,” cherished the time she spent with her family and she loved them dearly. She was a lifelong member of the Abell Street Church of Christ in Wharton. She was a strong individual who taught by example and had a strong Christian faith. She and Leon traveled extensively throughout the United States and the world promoting Brahman cattle and making friends everywhere they went. Eleanor lived a long and happy life. In February she moved to Elmcroft Assisted Living in Wharton. She touched the lives of many and will be missed by all who knew her. She passed away on August 31, 2012, in Wharton, Texas, due to complications following surgery. Funeral services were held on Monday September 3, 2012 at 2pm at Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Gene Polvado officiating. Burial followed in the Wharton City Cemetery.
