Lily Ann Hawes

Lily Ann Hawes, 86, of Wharton, Texas died at twelve noon December 23, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 14, 1926 on the family farm in Taiton, Texas. Her earliest memory was sitting under the organ bench at the Catholic Church while her mother, Marie Naiser Kacal, played for services, with the sweet fragrance of tuberoses filling the air. She was married 54 years to the love of her life, Edwin Hawes III. They were partners in every sense of the word; people rarely saw one without the other until his death. Mrs. Hawes was a principal in the family farm and ranch business, where she actively participated until her death. In earlier years, she prepared and delivered all of the cattle work meals, decorating the rice salad with the letter “H” made out of green bell peppers straight from her garden. She headed the Wharton County branch of the American Cancer Society and was a delegate for the Democratic Party, as well as being an accomplished artist and gardener. Her greatest passions were her husband, children and grandchildren. She loved the Lord and prayed every day of her life. She also enjoyed going to lunch with her friends, Joyce Forgason, Pat Shannon and Judy Selcer, and playing dominoes. Survivors include her son, Stephen Calhoun Hawes, and wife, Ruby, of Wharton; her daughter, Gail Ann Hawes of Wharton; her daughter, Joan Grace Hawes of Bay City; her daughter, Barbara Louise Hawes Morris and husband, Sterling Morris, of Corpus Christi; and her grandchildren Caroline Hawes Dickerson, Lily Hawes Morris, Edwin Hawes Dickerson and Jane Sterling Morris; and her sister Emily K. Maloch of Houston. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Edwin Hawes III; her daughter Sue Ann Hawes; her brother George Kacal and her sisters Martha Triska and Clara Jefferson. The family would like to thank her doctor Nicholas P. Sollenne and the staff of the Houston Medical Clinic and Houston Hospice of El Campo. The family gives special thanks to her friend and devoted caregiver Ofilia Mata and to Berdy Torres. Rosary was held at 2:30pm December 27, 2012 at Holy Family Catholic Church with services following at 3pm, and interment at Wharton City Cemetery with Father Dominic Antwi-Boasiako officiating. Pallbearers were Edwin Hawes Dickerson; Sterling M. Morris; Raymond C. Harrison, Jr.; Hugh Rust Hawes, IV; Christopher Theodore Hawes; John R. Fenn. Honorary pallbearers were James L. Forgason; Willie A. Harrison; Travis Smith; J. J. Fenn III; Marcial Sorrell; Robert Kleas; Dr. Nicholas P. Sollenne; Jerry Kacal; Burnaby Munson; W. A. Schwertner, Jr, B.E. Bernstein and Hugh Rust Hawes III. In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to Holy Family Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.
