Herminia “Minnie’ Cruz, age 87, of Wallis passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2013 following injuries sustained in a car accident. She was born on November 16, 1925, in Lane City, a daughter of the late Paul Mata and Isabel Casas Mata. Minnie was raised in the Lane City area and attended school there. She married Mr. Trini Vargas in 1950 in Wharton. He preceded her in death in 1979. Minnie worked for Richmond State School in Richmond. She enjoyed dancing, sewing, crochetting and growing plants in her garden. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and later, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. in addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sons, Joe David Vargas and Oscar Vargas, brothers, Pete Mata, Amado Mata and Emilio Mata and sisters, Trinidad Munoz, Lola Recio, Antonia Ferrell and Mary Mata. Funeral services will begin with visitation on Thursday evening from 5 till 9 pm at the Wharton Funeral Home with a rosary held at 7 pm. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, at 10am at Mt Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Gabriel Espinosa officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Survivors include her son, Ben Vargas and wife, Lisa of Wallis, brothers, Isabel Mata, Frank Mata, Robert Mata, and Manuel Mata along with sisters, Elvira Mata, Paula Munoz, Eva Martin, Cruz Guerrero and Frances Lara. Grandchildren, Joey Vargas, Stacey Vargas, Joe Vargas, Oscar Vargas, Aaron Vargas, Meagan Lisa Vargas, Macey Vargas, Lisa Jamie and Elizabeth Jamie also survive along with 18 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Pallbearers were her nephews.
