Mr. David Vick Hunter, age 89 of Wharton and formerly of El Campo died Friday morning, February 22, 2013 in a Wharton Nursing Home following a brief illness. He was born on May 6, 1923 in Sapulpa, OK the son of the late John Thomas Hunter and Mattye Hayes Hunter. Mr. Hunter graduated from St. Aloysius High School in Vicksburg, MS. He then attended and graduated from Southern Business College in Vicksburg, MS. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He married Mary Elizabeth Powers on February 2, 1944 in Vicksburg, MS and she preceded him in death on May 4, 2009. Two brothers, John Thomas Hunter, Jr. and Jack Bentley Hunter, also preceded him in death. Mr. Hunter and his wife were the former owners of Hunter Food Store in El Campo from 1947 until 1971. He then worked as an accountant for Rice Belt Warehouse in El Campo for fifteen years until his retirement in 1987. He has been a resident of Wharton since 1992. He served on the El Campo Volunteer Fire Dept for 40 years and was a member of American Legion Post 251 in El Campo for sixty-seven years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Wharton. His hobbies included fishing and quail hunting. Visitation will begin on Tuesday evening, February 26, at 6 pm with the funeral services held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Dr. Donnie Melton officiating. Graveside services and entombment will be held at 1:00 pm today at the Garden of Memories Mausoleum in El Campo. Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, John and Linda Hunter of Crescent and Gary and Ruth Hunter of Wharton; grandchildren Robert Hunter, Daniel Hunter, Devra Hunter, Lorinda Goodson, Jeffrey Hunter, and Ed Mooers; great grandchildren, Tyler and Jacob. Pallbearers will be Robert Hunter, Daniel Hunter, Jeffrey Hunter, Brian Goodson, Ed Mooers, and Carl Hunter.
