Mary Virginia Jones

Mary Jones, 99, passed away March 20, 2013, in Houston, Texas. She was born in Hungerford, Texas, February 21, 1914, to Taylor Joel Hudgins and Clytie Stallings Hudgins. She graduated from Wharton High School in 1931. After graduating from Texas State College for Women in 1935, she taught in the Bloomington public schools for a year until she married John Thomas Jones on July 11, 1936.. They resided in Wharton where they raised their three sons, Taylor Legare, John Thomas Jr., and Clyde Mick. Mary was an active and faithful member of The Church of Christ all of her life. She was interested and involved in civic and cultural affairs in Wharton and cherished her many lifelong friends there. A prolific artist, active gardener and world traveler, Mary also loved golf and could be found on the links of the Wharton Country Club until the age of 90. She was an avid bridge player and loved social gatherings of all kinds. After health problems began to limit her mobility, she moved to Houston in order to be nearer her son Taylor. She remained active in social events in her assisted living facility and skilled nursing unit until shortly before her death. Mary is survived by her three sons, Taylor of Houston, John and his wife Sidney of Austin, and Clyde and his wife Sandra of San Antonio, along with 5 granddaughters and their spouses: Cynthia and Chuck Stranger, Kimberley and Brian Kidwell, Stephanie and Paul Shropshire, Charlotte Jones, April and Kenneth Raymond, and one grandson, John Taylor Jones and his wife Gretchen . She also has 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother Green Clay Hudgins, her parents, her husband, her sister-in-law Doris “Dolly” Hudgins Rice and her daughters-in-law Mary Anne Jones and Mary Kathryn Jones. A memorial service celebrating Mary’s life will be held Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 1:00 p.m.at the Wharton Funeral Home.
