Nelta Rue Maffett

Nelta Rue Maffett, née Anderson, age 74 passed away on September 9, 2013 She was born May 5, 1939 in Garland, Texas the oldest daughter of Edward Rew Anderson and Blanche Orette Anderson, née Sutton. After graduating from Garland High School, Nelta enrolled in the nursing program at Texas Womens University in Denton, TX. She received her BSN and began her career as a Registered Nurse, later returning to TWU, Houston to achieve her Masters degree in nursing. During her career, Nelta served in many capacities but eventually found her calling in teaching and worked for the Wharton County Junior College as instructor of the LVN program making her way to director of the program. Her care and concern for her students was obvious to those who lived with her and her love of teaching kept her at WCJC for 30 years when she finally retired in 2004. Nelta wed the love of her life, George Allen Maffett, Jr. on June 21, 1964. They enjoyed living in Germany, Georgia and Florida before settling down in Wharton, Texas. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2011. During their 46 years of marriage, Nelta was a loving and dedicated mother to their 3 children and loved to spoil her 6 grandchildren. Friends and family were Nelta's passion and delight. She loved to entertain with her friends and made every family holiday special. She was a talented seamstress and looked forward to socializing with her sewing club friends every week. Nelta was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wharton, Texas and volunteered for their Logos program. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Kay Anderson, and her brother, Andy Anderson. Nelta is survived by her sister, Gail Finley and her husband, Harry; daughters, Tracy (Keith) Waldorf of Singapore and Shawnie (David) Fesyk of Calgary, AB.; son, Trey (Cyndi) Maffett of Wharton, TX; grandchildren, Gunnar, Harrison, Saylor, Wesley, Sydney and Sam. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Wednesday September 11, 2013, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Meredith Wende officiating. Internment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Harry Finley, Keith Waldorf, David Fesyk, Bob White, Kent Finley and Harrison Daniels. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her illness. Special thanks to Virginia Cantu and Lauralee Todd. Memorial contributions can be made to the Children and Youth programs in Nelta’s name at First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, Texas 77488. Funeral services under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
