Florencio “Floyd” V. Martinez, Sr. Florencio “Floyd” V. Martinez, Sr., age 60 of Spanish Camp, Texas passed away Saturday, September 14, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on January 11, 1953 in El Campo, a son of the late Pete and Isabel Vargas Martinez, Sr. Floyd was raised in the Glen Flora area and attended school in Crescent. He married Janie Flores on February 18, 1973. Floyd was self employed as a truck driver, building his transport business to include gravel, grass and grain. He was very active in his church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, helping with the barbecue at the church bazaar for many years. He enjoyed cooking for friends and family and singing and playing the bass guitar. Floyd was always finding new ways to spoil his children and later, grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by his sister, Maria Flores. Visitation was held on Tuesday evening, September 17, with a rosary recited at 7pm at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Wharton with Rev. Gabriel Espinosa officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Flora Cemetery. Pallbearers include: Ramiro Flores, John Martinez, Jr., Ruben Martinez, Mariano Flores, Jonathan Flores, and Bobby Martinez. Survivors include his wife, Janie Martinez of Wharton, daughters, Janie Avila and husband Simon, Jo Ann Quinonez and husband, Joe, Amalia Villarreal and husband, Benny and Veronica Guajardo and husband Jesse, and sons, Floyd Martinez, Jr., and Thomas Martinez and wife, Melanie all of Wharton, grandchildren, Nicholas, Raul, Carlos, Floyd III, Tiffany, D’Angelo, Gemma, Thomas, Jr. Dylan, Sarah Jo, Sophia, Lilliana, Troy, Luke, Emmitt Floyd, Danielle, Jesse, Jr., Jaden, Izabella and Izaiah. His sister, Josie Flores of Glen Flora and brothers, Pete Martinez, Jr and wife, Janie of Crescent, Joe Martinez and John Martinez, Sr. and wife, Rosana of Hungerford also survive. Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
