Lydia Ann Zahn, age 96 of Wharton, Texas passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at her son’s residence in Wharton surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 26, 1917 in East Bernard, a daughter of the late Charles and Frances Janis Holub. Lydia was raised in the Hungerford area and attended school there. She married Alfred Zahn on December 24, 1937 in East Bernard. He preceded her in death in 1992. Lydia was a lifelong homemaker. She loved to fish with her family when her children were at home. When her sons married, she enjoyed hosting family dinners for them and their families. She also enjoyed gardening. Lydia was a member of St John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton and was active in the Ladies Aide Society. Everyone looked forward to her homemade kolaches and pies. In addition to her parents and husband, Lydia was preceded in death by her brother, Edwin Holub, sisters, Stella Ondruch and Vlasta Kutra. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening, September 29, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home from 5 till 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, September 30, 2013 at St John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton with Rev. Barry Sharp officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Pallbearers include her grandsons, Todd, Cord, David, Wade, Brandon, and Aaron Zahn. Survivors include her sons, Alfred Zahn Jr. and wife, Sandra of Wharton, Charles Zahn and wife, Anne of Temple, Bobby Zahn and wife, Sherry of Huffman, Darrell Zahn and wife, Sharon of Wharton, Ervin Zahn and wife, Rhonda of Wharton, and Sidney Zahn and wife, Melissa of Tomball. Sister, Viola Ondruch of Sealy, Olga Burger of Wharton, 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren also survive.
