Paul D. Jones, age 73 of Wharton, Texas passed away Thursday, September 26, 2013 at a Houston hospital following a brief illness. He was born on February 10, 1940 in Commerce, a son of Nolan R. Jones and the late Thelma Barnett Jones. Paul was raised in the Celeste area and graduated from Celeste High School. He later attended The Preston Roads School of Preaching and became a preacher in the Church of Christ. He married Sherry Saye on July 4, 1959 in Celeste. Paul preached at many congregations including the following: Kingston, Texas, Baker City, Oregon, Post, Texas, Mission, Texas and Wharton, Texas. Paul was a ‘people’ person and loved to tell a good story, often with a joke involved. He enjoyed football, to the point of announcing the high school games while in Post. He was involved in Christian youth serving for several years as a director for Bandina Christin Youth Camp and on the board for the White River Youth Camp. Most recently, Paul served as a minister at the Abell St. Church of Christ, where he enjoyed engaging in a visitation ministry. Paul was a member of the Wharton Lions Club, serving many positions, including ‘tail twister’ for many years. In addition to his mother, Paul was preceded in death by his sons, Wesley and Gregory Jones. In addition to the memorial service held on Sunday, September 29, at the Abell Street Church of Christ, a burial service will follow cremation at a later date in the Celeste Community Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Sherry Jones of Wharton, a son, Russell Jones and wife, Mary of Salado, a daughter, Sonja Dixon and husband, Kenneth of Wolfforth, his father, Nolan R. Jones of Lubbock, a sister, Linda Wall and husband, Dan of Plains, another sister Judy Sessums and husband, Bobby also of Plains, a brother, Elwood Jones and wife, Mary of Greenville another brother, James Jones of Celeste, grandchildren, Taylor, Caitlyn and Hayden Jones and Chad, Aaron and Madison Dixon, and many friends.
