Shirley Ruth Freese Mican, age 86 of Wharton, TX died Sunday morning, November 3, 2013 in a Houston Hospice Hospital following a brief illness. She was born on November 27, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri and was the daughter of the late George Newton and Vernell Mahaney Wilson. Shirley was reared in Kansas City and graduated from East High School in 1944. She later attended Kansas City Junior College. She married Everett L. Freese on June 8, 1946. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1969. Shirley later married Leroy J. Mican on August 24, 1974 in Wharton. She worked for Entex and WISD. She eventually retired from the school property tax office, where she had worked for 16 years. Shirley was a cheerleader sponsor, a 4-H Leader, secretary for WHS Booster Club and a Browny Scout Leader. Shirley enjoyed attending her childrens’ and grandchildrens’ sporting events, traveling, cooking and Leroy’s vegetable and flower gardens. In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie Ehrhardt. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, November 9, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Revs. Meredith Wende and Don Storey officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Pallbearers include grandsons Jason Boatright, Riley Freese, Tyler Freese, Zachary Freese, Joel Freese and Jordan Calhoun. Survivors include her husband, Leroy J. Mican of Wharton and daughters, Karen Boatright and husband, Sam of Austin and Cheryl Calhoun and husband, Jim of Wharton. She is also survived by sons, Roy Freese and wife, Gayle of Glen Flora, Terry Freese and wife, Lisa of Wharton and Ken Freese and wife, Susan of Wharton. Her surviving step children are Lynell Ramirez and husband, Omar of Villavista, CA, Laurie Lindeman of Flower Mound and Curtis Mican of Corpus Christi. Additionally, she is survived by a brother, Dr. Jerry E. Wilson and wife, Rosemary of Leawood, KS and sister, Dr. Dixie Woodard and husband, John of Washington, D.C., Her surviving grandchildren are Jason Boatright, Jessica Donald and husband Watson, Riley Freese, Tyler Freese, Zachary Freese, Joel Freese, Jordan Calhoun, and Megan Calhoun. Her surviving great grandson is John Watson (Jack) Donald, IV. Step grandchildren include Christian Lindeman, Cameron Lindeman, Jarred Ramirez and Austin Ramirez.
