Christine Dorothy Hlavinka

January 19, 1920 — January 14, 2014

On January 14, 2014, Christine Dorothy Hlavinka of East Bernard, Texas, quietly passed away in the Hospice Room at the El Campo Hospital. She was born January 19, 1920, in Hungerford to the late John and Mary Laitkep Pilcik. She was married to the late Julius Hlavinka in 1942, and they lived their lives together in the farming and ranching business. Her husband preceded her in death in 1997. Christine was a homemaker who loved to garden and preserve all the wonderful vegetables she produced. She was an excellent cook who prepared her delicious fried chicken and coconut pies for her family and friends. Somehow she always found time to watch her beloved “As the World Turns” and any sports she could find on TV. She enjoyed listening to polka music and helping the musicians who came by weekly at the assisted living home in Wharton by playing the “spoons”. Her grandchildren were the “light of her life.” Christine was a member of the KJZT, the Catholic Daughters, the Holy Cross Altar Society and Holy Cross Church in East Bernard. A rosary and funeral service were held at 10:30 am , Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Donald Ruppert officiating. Burial followed at Holy Cross Cemetery. Pallbearers were her children and grandchildren. Serving as honorary pallbearers were her nieces and nephews. Survivors include her son, Robert Hlavinka and wife, Karen of East Bernard, daughter, Patricia Hlavinka of East Bernard, grandchildren Kyle Hlavinka and wife Emily of San Antonio, Todd Hlavinka of Houston, Kara Janecek and husband David of Columbus, Korinne Belock and husband D.J. of New York City and great grandchildren Kyla and Cade Janecek. In addition to her parents and husband, Christine was preceded in death by her grandson, Mark Hlavinka and ten siblings. Many thanks to the staff members at the former Hearthstone Assisted Living in Wharton, the Texas Catholic Home for the Aged in Hillje, the Houston Hospice – El Campo and to the doctors and nurses at the El Campo Hospital for their wonderful care and assistance.
