Robert John Valenta, age 97 of Lane City died Tuesday, February 11, 2014 in a Webster hospital following a brief illness. He was born on June 7, 1916 in Shiner, TX a son of the late Thomas Valenta and Anne Hajicek. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Ann Sliva; sisters, Rosie Stavinoha, Mary Valenta and Theresa Stavinoha; brothers, Joe Valenta and Albin Valenta. Mr. Valenta was a life-long resident of Lane City in Wharton County and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. He married Elizabeth Ann Sliva on October 24, 1938 in Wharton. Robert worked many jobs during his life including, farming, and working for Dow Chemical, in the oil fields, cotton ginner, carpenter and Perma Pom in Lane City. A Funeral Mass was held at 2:00 pm Saturday, February 15, 2013 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Bob Knippenberg officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Survivors include his son and daughter in law, Lawrence and Nerissa Valenta of Friendswood, TX; grandchildren, Christina E. Valenta and Anna M. Valenta and great grandchildren, Joseph H. Clark, Ella K. Barch and Grace A. Barch. Pallbearers were; Chris Voulgaris, Mark Sliva, Joe Clark, Guy Shelton, Franklin Valenta, and Nickolas Nobel Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
