Vernon Brewer, Sr., age 93 of Wharton died Thursday, March 13, 2014 in a Wharton care center following a lengthy illness. He was born on September 28, 1920 in Elkland, PA, a son of the late Frank and Sarah Mosier Brewer. Vernon was raised in the Elmira, NY area and attended school there. He served our country honorably in World War II, earning two purple hearts before being discharged on October 31, 1945. He married Willie Mae Rieger on October 7, 1943 in Wharton. Mr. Brewer was a longtime resident of Wharton. Vernon worked for LP Gas Tech as a truck driver for 32 years before retiring in 1979. He enjoyed being with friends and family and pitching horseshoes, and he was good at it, winning the New York State Fair in 1936 and Nationals at the 1991 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. In addition to his parents, his twin infant sons, Frank and Dennis also preceded him in death. A visitation was held on Saturday evening at Wharton Funeral Home with the funeral service held at 3 pm Sunday March 16, 2014 at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Meredith Wende officiating. Cremation will follow the funeral service. Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Brewer of Wharton, son, Vernon Brewer, Jr., of Wharton, sisters, Beverly and Selma, granddaughters, Stephanie Kiefer and husband, Tom and Heather Brewer, great grandchildren, James, Peyton, Marty, Marcus, and Zoe, and great great grandchildren, Nyla and Zyrah.
