Joseph Frank Hlavinka

Joseph Frank Hlavinka, age 82 of Hungerford passed away Tuesday morning, June 10, 2014 at a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. He was born on September 22, 1931 in East Bernard, Texas, a son of the late Joe M and Rosie Mills Hlavinka. Joe was a raised in the Hungerford area and attended school there. He served our country honorably in the United States Army. He married Dolores “Pat” Mikel on May 19, 1953 in Wharton. Joe worked in the office for Texas Gulf for many years before working at Gulf States Tube in Rosenberg. Pat and Joe owned and worked the Hungerford Supermarket for many years. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and was a member of St Johns Catholic Church in Hungerford. He enjoyed dancing, fishing, visiting with people, his grandchildren and great grandchildren, his meetings with the “Hamburger Club” at Dairy Queen and Whataburger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Linhart and Wenceslaus Hlavinka. Visitation was held on Thursday evening, June 12, 2014 at St Johns Catholic Church in Hungerford with a parish rosary recited at 7 pm. Funeral services were held on Friday, June 13, at 10 am at St Johns Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Burial followed in St Johns Catholic Cemetery in Hungerford. Serving as pallbearers were Cody Hlavinka, Christopher Hlavinka, Matt Steiner, Jared Lucher, Cody Kitzmiller and Carl Hlavinka. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Pat Hlavinka, daughters, Linda Hlavinka and Jimmy Tucker, Karen Ryman and husband, Gary, and son Gary Hlavinka and wife, Irene all of Hungerford, sister, Sophiann Oldag of Rosenberg, grandchildren, Ashley Hlavinka Lucher and husband, Jared, Amanda Hlavinka Kitzmiller and husband, Cody, Lisa Ryman Steiner and husband, Matt, Christopher Hlavinka and Cody Hlavinka and great grandchildren, Callie and Case Kitzmiller. Memorial contributions may be made to the St Johns Catholic Church Building fund, PO Box 121, Hungerford, Texas 77448. Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
