Waymond Henry Altenburg Jr., age 85, of Clifton, formerly of Wharton, died July 21, 2014, at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Nursing Home. He was born on January 26, 1929 in Old Gulf, Texas, the son of the late Waymond Henry Altenburg and Ada Whitaker Altenburg. Waymond attended public schools in New Gulf and was a 1947 graduate of Boling High School. After high school, he moved with family to Liberty, where his dad worked for Texas Gulf Sulphur Company. He graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1951. He married Lola Faye “Corky” Ball Altenburg on June 5, 1951 at First Baptist Church, Liberty, Texas. Waymond was drafted into the United States Marine Corp in 1951 and was stationed in Encinitas, California. After his time in the military, he worked for Texas Gulf Sulphur Company for a few years. They moved to Beaumont and he began working for United Gas Company in 1954 as office manager. The company was changed to Entex and Waymond was transferred to Houston for several years before being transferred to Wharton in 1976 as manager of Entex and he worked until retirement in 1987. Waymond was a member of the Lions Club and was involved in community activities in both Beaumont and Wharton. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wharton. He loved cooking, golfing, teasing and spending time with friends and family. He and Corky were married for 61 years before she passed away in 2012. Following her death, Waymond moved to Clifton to be by his sister and other family. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Charles “Buba” Altenburg. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Rev. Meredith Wende officiating. Internment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Survivors include his sister, Joann Gloff, and husband Dr. Don Gloff, of Clifton, Texas; sister-in-laws JoRene Altenburg of Boling, Lois Mae Nail of San Antonio; nieces and husbands Melanie and Rodney Rueter of Clifton, Jada and Travis Seppanen of Huntsville, Texas, Becky and Mike Griffin of Poetry, Texas, Cheryl Ball of Mineola; nephews and wives Greg and Angela Gloff of Clifton, Texas, Chuck and Lindsey Altenburg of Wharton, Texas, and Steve and Joyce Nail of San Antonio. Also, several great-nieces and great-nephews, Ben, Alex and Zach Gloff, Kayla and Alyssa Rueter, all of Clifton, Julie and Samuel Seppanen of Huntsville, Ellie Vulgaris and Tylie Altenburg of Wharton, Jamie and Jeff Sanders of Lindale, Dorie and Anna Beth Ball of Austin, Nolan Getty of Tyler, and two great-great-nieces and one great-great-nephew. Pallbearers will be Greg Gloff, Rodney Rueter, Chuck Altenburg, Travis Seppanen, Steve Nail, Ben Gloff and Zach Gloff.
