Peggy Sue Watkins, age 84 of Wharton passed away Wednesday afternoon, September 24, 2014 in a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness. She was born on December 04, 1929 in Beaumont, the daughter of the Fred Dillahunty and Ruby Dillahunty. Peggy Sue was raised in the Beaumont area and graduated from South Park High School. She stayed to be a full time mother to her three sons until the youngest son was in high school, and then worked for many years at New Gulf Elementary School as the secretary to the principal, and retired in the early 1990’s. Peggy Sue married Billy Watkins on June 6, 1953 in Beaumont. She enjoyed learning and applying the principles of Jesus Christ and helping those less blessed than herself. Additionally, Peggy spent much of her time camping, reading, enjoying life with other people, and she especially adored her grandchildren. She served on numerous Walk to Emmaus teams in a variety of positions, participated in the Rice Belt Travel Club and was formerly the Assistant Director of Volunteers for Wharton Share. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 27th from 5 pm till 9 pm at Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, September 28th at 2 pm at Wharton Funeral Home Chapel with Ross Talbert and Reverend Ben Trammell officiating. Pallbearers will be Briton Watkins, Stuart Watkins, Cody Hastings, Frank Robinson, Dr. David Samuelson and David Voulgaris. Honorary pallbearers will be Ernest Chudalla and Bob Fulton. Peggy was preceded in death by her son Reverend Rusty Watkins, and is survived by her husband of over 61 years, Billy Watkins of Wharton. She is also survived by her sons and daughters in law Randy and Roxanne Watkins of Hockley, Kenny and Denise Watkins of Austin, and grandchildren Briton and Stuart Watkins and Cody Hastings.
