Walter John Jordan

June 30, 1948 — February 24, 2015

Walter John Jordan, Jr., age 66, passed away at a Richmond hospital on February 24, 2015. Born to Walter and Ruth Hurley Jordan in Teaneck, New Jersey, on June 30, 1948, Walter lived in New Jersey until 1977, at which time he moved to the Houston area to pursue work as a landscaper. Walter learned landscaping skills from his father and then furthered his training at Penn State. Shortly after arriving in Texas, Walter met Sandra Lorenz, which he often said was “the best thing that ever happened” to him. After marrying in 1986, they moved to Wharton in 1994, where Walter enjoyed spending time with his wife and raising Greyhounds. He loved fishing trips and cooking whatever he could catch. Watching sports was also a favorite hobby; he especially liked all Houston teams. Known as “Hock” to his family and friends back North, Walter was also known for his great sense of humor, puns and artistic talent. He will always be remembered for his love of people and animals, and for his consideration toward others. Although he had no biological children, he was the only father and “Dadaw” that Sandra’s children and grandchildren knew. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Veronica Hoffman, and two children, Donny and Stacy. He is survived by Sandra, his wife of 29 years; a son, Darrell, of Kansas City; and five grandchildren- April, Miranda, Ashley, Chase and Savannah. Walter was Catholic by faith. Following cremation, a memorial service will be planned for a later date. Funeral services are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
