Violet Miller Freitag

September 30, 1931 — April 2, 2015

Mrs. Violet Miller Freitag, age 83, of Wharton, died Thursday, April 2, 2015 in El Campo, TX. She was born on September 30, 1931, in Tavener, TX, a daughter of Edward and Leona Guthman Miller. Mrs. Freitag was a longtime resident of Wharton County. She attended Crescent schools before leaving school to help her family. Violet had a long career in retail clothing sales. Many will remember her from Margie & Lee’s, or more recently Texas Western Wear and she was also a daycare teacher and cook at Child Development Center. She continued to work part time at the Wharton Civic Center until just nine months ago. Her strong work ethic showed through in all she did. June 14, 1949, she married Lowe Freitag, Sr, in Hempstead, TX. She was very active in her church, St. Paul’s Lutheran, where she will be sorely missed. Perhaps her greatest joy came from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and the wonderful meals she would prepare. In addition to her parents, her infant daughter Vickie Freitag preceded her in death. There will be a Memorial Service on Sunday, April 12th at 2pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Laura Olson officiating. There will be a private burial. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Lowe Freitag Sr.; daughter Letha Welling (John) of Wharton; son Lowe Freitag Jr. (Shelley) of Cat Springs, TX; one living sister, Lois Nistas; grandchildren William Carson Greene (Sarah), Cameron Austin Greene (Taylor), John M. Welling (Libby), Janee Carpenter (Curtis), Brian Freitag (Gabby), Kyle Freitag (Megan) and Lisa Freitag; 16 great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends. Pallbearers will be Carson Greene, Cameron Greene, Brian Freitag, Kyle Freitag, Ken O’Rear and Irving Gomez. Honorary pallbearers will be her former co-workers and customers who have lifted her up for all these many years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or Houston Hospice. Services are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at whartonfuneralhome.com.
