Raymond Hernandez, Jr.

October 13, 1942 — April 13, 2015

On April 13, 2015, Raymond Hernandez, Jr., 72, of Wharton quietly passed away at a Wharton Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on October 13, 1942, in Wharton, Texas, son of the late Ramon L. Hernandez, Sr. and Francisca Ramirez Hernandez. Raymond was a lifetime resident of Wharton having attended Wharton Schools. Raymond was drafted into the US Army and served his nation honorably, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and Marksman M-14. He worked for many years at a Tour Guide at a travel agency. He enjoyed traveling all over the world particularly to Australia and Mexico City. He was known as a jokester and enjoyed going to dances. In addition to his parents, his sisters Mary Aguilar, Santos Rivera and Stepsister Elvira Barrera; his brothers Frank Hernandez and stepbrother George Hernandez preceded him in death. Visitation was held Wednesday evening, April 15th at Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton with a rosary that followed at 7pm. Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 16th at 10am at Holy Family Church with Father Gabriel Espinosa officiating. Members of the American Legion Post of Wharton proudly performed military honors. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Serving, as pallbearers were Martin Aguilar, Ricky Cruz, Joseph Rivera, Johnnie Cruz Jr., Ysidro Merlos and Armando Garcia. Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Faye Ferrel Hernandez of Wharton, daughters, Monica Hernandez, step daughter Diana Danielson and Tracy of El Campo; stepsons, Robert Cruz of Wharton, Johnnie Cruz Jr. and wife Eileen of Wharton and Ricky Cruz and fiancée Debra Huge of Bay City; sisters, Shirley Castro of East Bernard and Margaret Garcia of El Campo; brothers, Eliseo Hernandez and wife Lucilla of Wharton and Johnnie Hernandez and wife Sonia of Manderville, LA; 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at www.whartonfuneralhome.com
