Sylvia Ann Matthys, age 79, of Wharton, passed away July 12, 2015 at her home in Wharton surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 27, 1935 in Wharton, Texas, the daughter of the late C.B. and Elizabeth Ione King Williams. Sylvia graduated from Wharton High School. She married Clifton Wayne Matthys on September 3, 1954 in Wharton. Sylvia enjoyed working at Christ is Life Church as the church secretary for over 15 years. Together as partners in ministry, Sylvia and Clifton were instrumental in supporting the church in all its activities. Sylvia’s artistic ability helped with the fundraisers needed to expand the original facility and later establish a new facility. Sylvia also counseled with many individuals in the church and offered in-depth teachings for Sunday School, Womens’ Meetings and, occasionally, the main service. Sylvia was a very creative lady, handy at many things including, painting, pottery work, clay modeling and painting ceramics. In addition to these projects, she was known as a gracious person, always smiling and helping those less fortunate than herself. Sylvia was Christian by Faith. Visitation will be held Friday, July 17, 2015 starting at 6 pm at Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 18 at 11 o’clock am at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Atherton officiating. Cremation will follow the services. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Clifton Matthys of Wharton, daughters, Michelle Solomon, and Lynette Masek and husband, Thomas both of Wharton, grandchildren, Jason Solomon and Elizabeth Masek. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 22246 West Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas 77030.
