Bernice Scholz James

Ms. Bernice Scholz James went to be with her Lord at age 85, on November 19, 2015, in Stafford Texas. She was born on May 25th, 1930 in East Bernard, Texas to Herman and Lydia Planka Scholz, and then early in life, moved to Pledger, Texas where she grew up on a small working farm. Bernice attended school in Boling, completing the 10th grade when she decided to go to work with her sister Marie in Houston, Texas. She married the love of her life, William Franklin James, in 1949 and had two sons together, Douglas Herman and Thomas Franklin James. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank James, sisters Helen Martin, Marie Calloway, Barbara Tipton, brother Henry Scholz and daughter-in-law Pam James. She is survived by her sister Genevive Shedyak of Hope, Texas, sons Douglas & Cheri James of Damon, Thomas James of Sweeny, three granddaughters, four great grandchildren, one niece and several nephews. After Frank died, Bernice and the boys moved back in with her parents so she could attend beautician school in Victoria, Texas. After she graduated, she opened her own shop in the home she had in Boling. She then left her practice to help her sister Barbara run her business in Pledger. Later she was employed by Boling Independent School District as a bus driver and janitor. She retired from the school district with 12 years of service in August 1988. She resided with her mother in Pledger until she became a resident at Matagorda Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Bay City, Texas. Bernice loved playing canasta with her sisters and mother. She also loved country music, bingo, and dominoes. She loved going to the Bay City Rodeo and spending time with family and friends. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and workers at Matagorda Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Visitation will be held Monday November 23, 2015 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday November 24th at 10:00 AM also at Wharton Funeral Home with Brother Kenneth James officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be Jamie Hanzik, Jody Hanzik, Matthew Kresse Jr., Teddy Martin, Allen McNeil, Mike Ezzell. Honorary Pallbearer will be Truitt Hanzik.
