Mrs. Lupe Mata, age 89, of Wharton, died Sunday, December 6, 2015 in a Richmond hospital following a chronic illness. She was born on March 18, 1926, in Cuero, TX, a daughter of the late Rev. George Valdez and San Juana Tamez Valdez. Lupe was raised in the Wharton area. She later graduated from Wharton County Junior College with a nursing degree. Prior to her retirement, she was a nurse with the Richmond State School in Richmond, TX. On October 24, 1943 she married the love of her life, Isabel Mata in Lane City. Lupe enjoyed watching sports, her garden and decorating her home for all the holidays. The greatest joy of her life was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband; her sisters Janie Mata and Sara Ramos; brothers, Jasper Valdez and Isaac Valdez, preceded her in death. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, December 8, 2015 after 6 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 9th at 11 a.m. at Wharton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Limas officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Survivors include daughters, Margaret Black of Houston and Lillie Barfield and husband Jimmy of Houston; sons Pete and wife Nellie of Dallas, John and wife Diana of New Caney, Emilio Mata of Wharton and Adam and wife Pam of Wharton; 7 granddaughters, 5 grandsons and 10 great grandkids. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and care given to her by Cynthia Llanes and Angel’s Home Health Care. Pallbearers will be Pete Mata, Adam Mata, Emilio Mata, John Mata, Jeremy Barfield, Paul Mata, Addison Mata, Max Hernandez and Stephen Mata.
