Joe L. Gonzales, 88, of Wharton, passed away on March 11, 2016, at a Wharton nursing home. Joe was born on January 23, 1928 in Markham, Texas to the late Jose and Teresa Losoya Gonzales. Joe was raised in the Tidehaven area and attended school there. After serving in the United States Army as a Military Policeman, he obtained his Honorable Discharge. Joe married Amelia Driscoll on June 3, 1951 in Blessing, Texas. She preceded him in death on February 19, 1999. Joe worked for Texasgulf in the maintenance department until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing for Redfish, going to Coushatta and Las Vegas, a good game of Poker and being with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Lozano and Beatrice Flores and brother, Pete Gonzales. Joe is survived by his daughters, Maria Lopez and husband, Frank of Lufkin, Betty Cordoba and husband, Robert of Brazoria, Belinda Gonzales and husband, Tim Garcia of El Campo, Joe Ann Marshall and husband Louis of Wharton, Shirley Arriaga and husband, Amadeo of Boling, and Rachel Reyna and husband, Frank of Wharton, sons, Joe Charles Gonzales of Lufkin, Edward Gonzales of Wharton, Joseph Ross Gonzales of Cibolo, sister, Teresa Luna Vietti of Pearland, brothers, Marcos Gonzales, and Richard Gonzales, both of Bay City. Seventeen grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren also survive, along with many nieces, nephews and other family friends. Serving as pallbearers were Dustin Cordoba, Matthew Gonzales, Michael Lopez, Frankie Lopez, Andrew Reyna, Joseph Ross Gonzales, Derrick Swiler, Kevin Gomez, Joe Charles Gonzales and Edward Gonzales. Honorary pallbearer was Louis Marshall. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2016 from 5 till 7 pm, at Wharton Funeral Home, with a rosary recited at 5 pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 14, at 2 pm at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 507 South East Ave, Wharton Texas 77488. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery under the auspices of the Wharton American Legion Post 87 and VFW post 4474. Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Mt.
