Mary Anne Hempel

Mary Anne Hempel, age 84, of Wharton passed away on Tuesday April 12, 2016 in a Bryan nursing center following a sudden illness. She was born on April 2, 1932 in Newgulf, TX, the daughter of the late Solomon and Mary Kuchar McGehee. Mary was the first baby born in Newgulf Hospital. She was raised in Newgulf and Boling. After graduating from Boling High School in 1949, she attended Sam Houston State Teachers College. On August 4, 1975 she married Marvin Hempel. He preceded her in death on January 18, 1994. Mary enjoyed reading, politics, birds, sewing, working in her garden and children of all ages. Following cremation, private memorial services will be held at a later time. She will be entered into rest with her husband at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Survivors include her friends, Joy and Brian Keith Casey of Wharton, and their children, Amanda and Britney.
