Betty Jo Zahn, 84, of Wharton, Texas, passed away on Thursday morning surrounded by her loving family in a Wharton nursing center. She was born on June 13, 1931 in Louann, Arkansas a daughter of the late Joseph Lavelle and Dora Drucilla White Simms. Betty Jo was raised in the West Columbia area and graduated from school there. She later graduated from Wharton County Junior College as a LVN. Betty Jo worked for several hospitals in the Wharton area for over 47 years, earning nurse of the year in 1991 and 1994. She married Waldo Werner Zahn on February 20, 1958 in Wharton. He preceded her in death on August 31, 2005. Betty Jo enjoyed reading, crochet and “Sunday Drives” with Waldo. Her favorite time was spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Dee Prince in 1995 and brothers, Gentry and Arthur E Simms. Betty Jo is survived by her daughter, Robin Jaquez and husband, Samuel of Wharton, sisters, Margaret Mosley of New Waverley and Florene Meazle of Angleton, grandchildren, Jonathan W. Zahn and wife, Rosy of Spring, Aron Jaquez and wife, Amanda of Wharton and Tiffany Mitchell and husband, Keith of Hungerford, and great grandchildren, Jacob Brito, Chloe Zahn, Catalina Zahn, Hunter Mitchell, Levi Mitchell and Jaxon Jaquez. Visitation begins at 6 pm Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at 2 pm at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Curtis Mosley officiating. Burial will be in Wharton Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Hunter Mitchell, Jacob Brito, Jonathan Zahn, Aron Jaquez, Collin Houston and Tristan Houston with Levi Mitchell and Jaxon Jaquez serving as honorary pallbearers.
