Joe W. "Sonny" Joines, Jr., 83, of Boling, passed away on June 7, 2016, in a Wharton Nursing center. Joe was born on December 7, 1932 in Wharton, TX to the late Joe and Viola Barnett Joines. Joe was raised in the Wharton area and went to school in Hungerford and later Wharton High School. He later joined the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he married Joyce Laverne Allen on December 18, 1953 at Abel Street Church of Christ in Wharton. Joe worked in the oil field as a roughneck for Bay City Drilling and then for Goldrust. After that, Joe worked for over 20 years in the field for Texasgulf Sulfur Company before retiring to work for Don Elliott as a car driver until retiring again after another 20 years of service. Joe enjoyed working on and rebuilding tractors, lawnmowers and was very mechanically inclined. He shared a passion for traveling with his wife, Joyce, visiting most of the Eastern seaboard and many of the middle United States. The one thing that always made him smile was spending time with his family. He loved his sons with whom he shared his mechanical knowledge and hard work ethic, his grandchildren who he spoiled and finally his great grandchildren, who brought a special twinkle to his eye and he couldn’t tell no. In addition to his parents and wife, Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Joines, and three nephews, Douglas Allen, David Lowe and Leonard “Bubba” Miller. Joe is survived by his sons, Gary W. Joines and wife, Gay of Boling and Michael L. Joines of Boling, sisters, Ruth Miller of Wharton and Jeane Lowe of Porter, grandchildren, Marci Joines Macha and husband, Allen, of Guy and David L. Joines and wife, Dawnette, of Boling and his great grandchildren, Abbi Joines, Graci Joines, and Brayden Kocian and numerous nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers are his nephews Dwayne Allen, Douglas Allen, David Allen, Allen Munch, Johnny Lowe, Terry Lowe, Bill Joines Jr., Tom Joines, Joe Ray Joines, and Jon Joines. Visitation will be held on Friday evening, June 10, 2016 at Wharton Funeral Home from 6 till 9 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 11th at 10 am at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Gene Palvado officiating.
