Gil C. Mata, 70, of Wharton, died Saturday, August 27, 2016, in Houston, TX. Gil was born on March 2, 1946, to Gil V. and Susie Cerrillo Mata in Wharton, TX. Gil graduated from Wharton High School, class of 1968. He served in the Marine Corps, including in Vietnam. Following his return, he married his wife Yolanda Mata. He also went to work as a printer, and was later promoted to Print Shop Supervisor. He worked in the printing industry for over 25 years, until his retirement in 1998. He was preceded in death by his wife Francis “Yolanda” Mata; his parents; sisters Mary Alice Alameda, Sandra Mata and Rosa Mata; and brother David Mata. He was survived by his son, Omar Mata and wife Marisa; daughter, Alicia Mata; sisters, Janie Valdez and Sonya Mata-Garcia and her husband Desi; and brother Rudolph Mata and wife Millie. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 from 5-9 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Father John Kollannur. Private burial will follow at a later date. Pallbearers will be Richard Valdez, Frank Valdez, Ronnie Valdez, Mark Mata, John Cerrillo and Phil Cerrillo. Honorary Pallbearers will be Fernando Cerrillo, Ernest Longoria, Frank Ramirez and Mike Aguliar. Funeral services under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
