Manuel Porter Garcia, 76, died on October 24, 2016, at a local nursing home. He was born February 26, 1940, in La Grange, TX, to Manuel V. and Aurora (Porter) Garcia, and raised in Wharton, TX. Manuel graduated Wharton High School and attended Wharton County Junior College. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force rising to the rank of AIC as an Air Traffic Controller and honorably discharged. On July 2, 1965 he married Rose Marie Gonzales. As a young man he played baseball while in school, Jr. College and in the military. He enjoyed watching the Astros and attending Astros games. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, Tim and Tom, playing dominos and cards and reminiscing of his younger days growing up. Manuel is survived by his wife Rose Marie Gonzales Garcia; daughter Elizabeth Anne Warren and husband Robert James of Houston; sons Arthur Garcia of Houston and Robert Garcia also of Houston; sister Linda Cerrillo and husband Richard of Victoria; brothers Alex Garcia and wife Elvira of Fort Worth, Edward Garcia and wife Lydia of Round Rock and Rudy Garcia and wife Gloria of Spring Branch; and grandsons Timothy Garcia and Thomas Garcia. A Rosary will be recited on Saturday October 29, at 9:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., also on Saturday at St. John’s, with Father Charles Dwomoh officiating. Serving as Pallbearers will be David Munoz, Michael Munoz, Nikolas Capo, Anthony Garcia, Christopher Garcia, Kenneth Garcia, Alex Jr. Garcia and Roy Gonzales . Graveside services will follow at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be performed by American Legion Post 87 and VFW Post 4474.
