Walter Hofferek, 82, of Wharton, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2016, following a lengthy illness in a Wharton nursing faculity. Walter was born on May 21, 1934 in String Prairie, Texas to the late Joe and Betty Roznovsky Hofferek. Walter was raised in the Cistern area and attended school there. Walter served our country in the United States Army, earning his Honorable Discharge on November 13, 1957. He later married JoAnn Yancey on January 24, 1959. She preceded him in death on November 4, 2014. Walter worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for many years in Bridge Construction. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and his barbeque was second to none. In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his brother Daniel Hofferek. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 10am at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with Rev. Harry Briscoe officiating. Serving, as honorary pallbearers were Sam Hofferek, Matt Hofferek, Ross Chumchal, David Garza, Jimmy Alford, and Pepper Friedrichs. Walter is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Friedrichs and husband, Pepper of Ganado, son, Walter “Bo” Hofferek, Jr. and wife, Doris of Victoria, sister, Betty Kotrla of Sealy, grandchildren, Ross Chumchal, Ashley Friedrichs, Sam Hofferek, Matt Hofferek and wife, Chambrie, Rebecca Alvarez and husband, Trent, Tara Lehnert and Stephanie Boone.
