Nona Alpard Raphael passed away on November 22, 2016, in Plano, Texas, at the age of 87. Nona was born on April 5, 1929, in Wharton, Texas. She was the daughter of Aaron Alpard and Nellie Shapiro Alpard. Nona grew up in Wharton and graduated from Wharton High School in 1946. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1950, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree as a registered dietitian. Nona enjoyed reading, playing mah jong, crossword puzzles, watching sports and The Food Network on TV. Her favorite teams included the Houston Rockets and the Houston Oilers/Texans and more recently the Texas Rangers. She frequently visited the Wharton County Library where she read fiction and current bestsellers. She also was a great cook. Some of her favorite dishes included "Grandma's chicken and rice," Texas sheet cake, standing rib roast with roasted potatoes, and guacamole. She spent countless hours with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter Amy Fuqua (Stephen) and sons Leonard Raphael (Rhonda), Alan Raphael (Rene), and Neal Raphael. Her 8 grandchildren include Jessica Raphael, Kristina Raphael, Brandon Fuqua, Ashley Fuqua, Cameron Raphael, Zane Raphael, Savannah Raphael, and Ian Raphael. A graveside service was held on November 23, 2016, at Shearith Israel Cemetery with Rabbi Steve Morgen officiating. Pallbearers included Stephen Fuqua, Brandon Fuqua, Leonard Raphael, Alan Raphael, Neal Raphael, and Larry Wadler. The family has asked that any donations that are made, be in memory of Nona to the Wharton County Library. Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
