Laurine Marie Schwertner

May 13, 1921 — February 24, 2017

Laurine Marie Schwertner, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Friday, February 24, 2017 in a Houston hospital. She was born in Hallettsville, Texas on May 13, 1921, to the late August and Agnes Juroc Weller. Laurine attended school in Hallettsville. She married Herman William Schwertner, Jr. in Hallettsville. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1978. She began working in Retail at Perry Bros shortly thereafter. Following a move to Schwertner, Texas she operated a grocery store, and later moved to the Austin area to help as a bookkeeper with the family business, Capitol Feed and Milling. Laurine began working for Montgomery Wards and was soon the head of 14 departments and finally, following a brief retirement at the age of 66, she finished her working career for Dillard’s where she retired following 11 more years at the age of 87. Laurine enjoyed working and staying busy, she competed in Ballroom Dance competitions, played many hands of Skip Bo, and was a member of the Catholic Daughters. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Ann Schwertner, son, Ken Schwertner and sister, Angie Hessler. She is survived by her daughter, Karol Hammett and husband, Aubrey of Thorndale, sons, Billy Schwertner and wife, Mary “Sis” of Wharton, Tommy Schwertner and wife, Debbie of Florence and Terry Schwertner and wife, Jill of Beaumont, grandchildren, Teresa Lee, Sharon Atkinson, T.Wayne Schwertner, Patricia Hammett, Summer Thompson, Sabrina Schwertner Slate Schwertner and Paige Broussard, great grandchildren include, Austin Atkinson, Molly Atkinson, Will Lee, Trey Schwertner, James Schwertner, Molly Schwertner, Scout Thompson, and Scarlett Thompson, and special caregiver, Gloria Rodriguez. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. on Monday, February 27, 2017 at Wharton Funeral Home with Holy Rosary recited at 7pm by members of the Catholic Daughters. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. The Rite of Committal and burial will be at Assumption Cemetery in Austin. Serving as pallbearers are T. Wayne Schwertner, Slate Schwertner, James Schwertner, Trey Schwertner, Austin Atkinson, Will Lee, Luis Comacho and Luis Comacho, Jr. Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
