Marte Garza Lopez Marte G. Lopez, 77, of El Campo and formerly of Boling, Texas, passed away March 11, 2017, at a Sugarland hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born March 11, 1940 in Newgulf to the late Samuel and Jesusa Garza Lopez. Marte was raised in the Newgulf area and attended Newgulf and Boling schools. He joined the United States Navy in 1960 and earned his Honorable Discharge in 1962. Marte married Susie Cervantes on December 16, 1966 in Houston. He worked in the construction industry as a contractor, and electrician for many years before retiring in 1998. Marte was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, but enjoyed all sports, especially baseball and boxing. He loved his yardwork and could be found outdoors tending the yard most days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Elijah Lopez. Marte is survived by his wife of 50 years, Susie Lopez of El Campo, sons, Samuel Lopez of El Campo, daughter, Michelle Lopez Miller of Corpus Christi, sister, Elizabeth Carrion and husband, John of Houston, brothers, Sam Lopez of Chicago and Mauricio Lopez and wife, Anita of Needville, grandchildren, Samuel Lopez, Jr. and wife, Alexis, Zachary “Benny” Lopez, Isaac Ray Lopez, Jessica Michelle Miller, David Lee Miller, Kristi Kay Miller, Steven Allen Miller, and Micheal Abusalah and great grandchildren, Gabriella, Zaden, Queenia, Quentin, David, Julius, Danika, Aden, Mauricio, Amyiah, Analyah and Zaiden. Visitation will begin at 5pm Friday, March 17 at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rosary and Vigil Services to begin at 7pm with Deacon Margarito Cervantes, Jr. officiating. Funeral services will begin at 10 am on Saturday, March 18 at St Robert Catholic Church in El Campo with Fr Laurence Matula celebrating the Funeral Mass. Rite of Committal will be held in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home. Condolences can be made at whartonfuneralhome.com.
