Bertrand Davis went to be with the Lord on March 27, 2017 while surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on August 27, 1928 to Bert and Madge Davis on their ranch in Oglesby, Texas. Bertrand graduated from Texas State University in 1951 where he attended on a football and basketball scholarship. He was a school teacher and coach for 31 years – teaching in Cherokee, Crystal City, and Boling, Texas. He was a faithful member of the Boling Baptist Church, Newgulf Baptist Church, and later at the Iago Federated Church (Baptist Group). Bertrand was ordained as a deacon in 1960 at the Boling Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School classes and for a time, head of Deacons. He coached multiple sports – football, basketball, track, and tennis. Bertrand was a strong Christian example to each of the boys he coached throughout the years. After retiring from teaching, he and his wife, Billie, became very active in The Texas Baptist Men’s organization – building multiple churches throughout Texas. He was an avid outdoorsman and accomplished carpenter but his major passion outside of football was fishing. He taught his sons and later their sons how to fish. Bertrand enjoyed being around young people and had a great sense of humor. For the last 7 years, Bertrand and Billie have been living at The Forum in The Woodlands. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Billie Davis, and his three children: Billy Don (The Woodlands) and his wife Anne; Jim Alan (Guntersville, Alabama) and his wife Brenda; and Dianne Elaine (Davis) Hughes (The Woodlands). Bertrand had 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. On Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Wharton Funeral Home, family visitation will begin at 11:00 AM with service to follow at 11:30 AM.
