Harold “Buddy” Attaway Buddy Attaway, 88, of East Bernard, passed away April 8, 2017, at his home in East Bernard. Buddy was born January 9, 1929 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to the late Joe and Julia Attaway. The youngest of four children, Buddy was raised in Longview and graduated from Longview High School, attended Kilgore Jr. College before graduating from Baylor University with his bachelor of science. After playing center and linebacker for the Baylor Bears, he enjoyed a brief NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Buddy married Joan Ferguson on December 30, 1950 in Wharton. They made their life together in Wharton County, where Buddy was a rice farmer for many years. He enjoyed fishing, playing pranks on people and watching sports. In addition to his parents, Buddy was preceded in death by his sisters, Clara LaRoe, Judy Jackson, and Jody Doggett. Buddy is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Joan Attaway of East Bernard, daughter, Javon Lechler of Sealy and son, Kip Attaway of Katy, grandchildren, Shane Lechler and wife, Erin, Derek Lechler and wife, Alexa and Lauren Attaway and fiancé, Ted Little along with great grandchildren, Jagger, Bailey, Jett, Emerson, and Julia. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 11 from 6-8 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Wharton Cemetery in Wharton.
