Robert Cuellar Campos

December 7, 1926 — May 7, 2017

Mr. Robert Cuellar Campos, Sr. passed away on May 7, 2017 at his home in Wharton. Robert, also known as “Beto” was born on December 7, 1926 in Gulf, Texas to Alvino and Guadalupe Campos and had fourteen brothers and sisters. He grew up in Newgulf and started working at DOW Chemical in Freeport at the very, young age of 13 (with a minor’s release signed by his father). Five years later, he registered for the draft for World War II, along with friends Valentin Gomez and Jose Trevino. He proudly served for two years on active duty with the Army of the United States. He later continued to serve in the United States Air Force for sixteen years, with a reserve unit out of Ellington Field. Mr. Campos followed in his father’s footsteps and devoted 35 years to working at Texasgulf Sulfur Company and retired from there. On September 16, 1950, he married Aurora Aguilar or “Dora” in Wharton. They later moved from New Gulf to Wharton in 1968 and have lived there ever since. For nearly 67 years they shared in all the highs and lows that come with raising five children. Family was most important to Beto and if you were a friend of his, you were family. His life reflected hard work and service to others, always willing to lend out a helping hand for family and friends in need. He took care of everyone and always put others’ needs before those of his own. He enjoyed visiting with friend/relatives; talking about old times…with anyone and everyone; and indulging in Miller Highlife at “West of the Brazos” or under the tree at the Boling Supermarket. He was a simple man that taught his children that your word is your bond and to always do your best and you’ll be ahead. Mr. Campos’ family included three daughters and two sons, Mary Ann Valdez of Wharton; Robert C. Campos, Jr. of Wharton; George Timothy Campos of Wharton; Theresa Campos-Wells and husband Michael Wells of Wharton; and Amber Lynn Campos of San Antonio. Seven grandchildren included Tanya Mendiola and husband Roy Mendiola of Wharton; Jeannette Castro (deceased); Gina Cady and husband Brandon Cady of Seadrift; Jonathan Michael Wells of El Campo; Christopher Green of Wharton; Joshua Robert Wells of Wharton; Emily Elizabeth Wells of Wharton; Seth Robert Louis Campos of Rosenberg; Chase Allyn Denison of San Antonio; Sophia Analise Campos Torres of San Antonio; and Jaxon Ryker Wells of El Campo. Three great-grandchildren included Roy Christopher, Madison Nykole and Ryan Michael Mendiola. Three great-great grandchildren included Krissilyn, Jeremiah and Madilyn Mendiola. Mr. Campos leaves behind eight brothers and sisters, Alonzo Campos of Temple; Rudolfo Campos of Wharton; Irene Carbajal and Lydia Campos of Boling; Amelia Garcia and Corina Robles both of Houston; Elvia Ramirez of Victoria; and Betty Jimenez of South Carolina. He is preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters; Alvino Campos, Jr., Richard Campos, David Campos, Carlos Campos and Delia Campos & Margaret Rios.
