Charlie, 89, was peacefully called to his eternal home on Monday, June 12, 2017. He was born on October 1, 1927 in Prairie Hill, TX to William R. Roberts and Myrtie Ethel Allen. Charlie was a Navy veteran, having served in WWII. He married Ethel and they celebrated 61 great years of marriage. Together they owned and operated Roberts Furniture Company in Houston for 27 years. They were a team in work and play and made many lasting friendships throughout their active lives. After they closed their business, he went to work for Harris County, where he retired as Chairman of the Appraisal Review Board. He and Ethel retired in Wharton TX with their horses, cats and dogs to relax and enjoy life with their family. He was an active member of the Salt Grass Trail and held many positions including Scout, Wagon Boss, Assistant Trail Boss, Trail Boss and Executive Committee Treasurer. He was also a member of the Tejas Vaqueros, an annual trail ride in Kerrville, TX. He was an active member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo serving on the Steer Auction Committee, Vice Chairman & Chairman for the Trail Ride Committee, Vice President and a Lifetime Director. He was a lifetime member of the Houston Farm & Ranch Club holding positions of Vice President, President and Chairman of the Board. Charlie was a natural born leader and a good and honest man who earned the respect and friendship of many. He also enjoyed time at the barn with his friends, taking his daughter to youth rodeos, dancing, hunting, fishing, and teaching his grands to fish and ride horses. Later in life he took pride in caring for his rose garden. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ethel Roberts,; stepson, Gene Rash and granddaughter, Kara Zornes. He is survived by his daughter, Sam ‘Shirley’ Hoke and her husband Gary; grandchildren: Angele Kostroun, Jennifer Shortt and her husband Vaughn, Linz Raney and her husband Mark, Chris Rash and his wife Isabel, Tre-Lee and Tucker Rash and eight great grandchildren: Dylan, Joshua, Macie, Reed, Blake, Hanna, Brandon & Ashleigh. Please join us in Celebrating the Life of Charlie Roberts at a memorial service, which will be conducted at eleven in the morning on Friday, the 7th of July, at Second Baptist Church in the Chapel, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston, where Rev. B. A. Turnage is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the Deacon’s Parlor. A Military Graveside Service will be held at three in the afternoon at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, 3511 E. Alabama, Wharton TX. Those serving as pallbearers will be Andy Hollingsworth, Chris Rash, Dylan Kostroun, Joshua Kostroun, Mark Raney and Vaughn Shortt.
