Marjorie Thompson Turko, age 91, passed away quietly on August 6, 2017. She lived a long, full life and will be missed by her many friends and family. Marjorie was born on May 21, 1926 in Starks, Louisiana and was the youngest of twelve brothers and sisters. Marjorie was very active in school and sports. She graduated from Starks High School on May 24, 1943 and continued her education at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (later known as the University of Southwest Louisiana). At Southwestern Louisiana Institute, Marjorie was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, Red Jackets, and was very active in women’s athletics, especially basketball. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science on June 22, 1946. She made her home in Houston, Texas where she worked and raised her family. In her retirement at 62, she began enjoying her hobbies. She loved to travel, go to water aerobics classes, play dominoes and other games, and participate in activities at the YMCA. Marjorie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Karen and Robert Preisler; grandson, Bobby Preisler and granddaughter, Lisa Preisler. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Stains Thompson, husband, John Peter Turko, daughter Vicki Ann Turko, and eleven brothers and sisters. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 11 am at Miller Cemetery, Highway 109 South, Starks, Louisiana. Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
