Betty Jean Legler, 83, of Wharton, passed away October 7, 2017, at a Wharton assisted living facility. Betty was born on September 5, 1934 in Mackay, Texas, a daughter of the late Walter A. and Vera Frels Matthys. Betty was raised in Mackay and graduated from Crescent High School. She worked as a bookkeeper for Arthur Holland and as manager of Wharton Country Club for many years. She later became secretary of Boling Production Company in Boling, a position she held for 40 years. Betty was an avid reader, loved traveling to the Hill Country and playing at the casinos. A very devout Catholic, she was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Tiffany Hartley and brother, Wilbert “Doc” Matthys. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Hartley of Wharton, sister, Gladys Caylor of Arizona, brother, Deacon Alvin Matthys and wife, Caroline of Wharton, grandson, Brandon Hartley and girlfriend Lauren Burns of Katy, great-grandaughter, Teagan Hartley of Katy, and numerous friends and relatives. Following Cremation, memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Robert Knippenberg and Deacon David Valdez officiating. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM and a parish Rosary will be recited at 10:30 AM. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Honorary pall bearers are Jesus Rubio, Roger Pahmiyer, Rose Martin, Tara Jefferson, and the staff at Elmcroft Assisted Living.
