Agnes Ann Mican Minks, 76, of East Bernard passed away peacefully on Monday, April 12, 2021, after battling a long-term illness, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in East Bernard on January 24th, 1945, to the late Frank and Isabel Okruhlik Mican of Hungerford TX.
Agnes was a member of the East Bernard High School 1964 graduating class. She attended Business School in Houston and later worked for an Insurance company. After moving back to Wharton County, she worked for the County Clerk’s office for Delphine Marek. During this time, she became engaged to Charlie Ray Minks and was married October 1, 1967. To this union they were blessed with a daughter, Patricia Kay, born on September 11, 1969, and a son, David Charles, born on December 31, 1970.
In 1975, Agnes became the first Branch Manager at the newly built community library in East Bernard. She served in this position for 39 1/2 years, promoting reading and literacy through both the children’s and adult summer reading programs. Her favorite love, in addition to her family, was reading and assisting the many patrons of East Bernard to find that special book so they may also share in her passion. She retired in December of 2014. Throughout the years, Agnes archived the history of the East Bernard Library and its many programs through photos and other records. As her children grew, she volunteered as a Cub Scout and 4-H assistant leader. Agnes was a very devout Christian and faithfully served her church as a religious education teacher, CYO volunteer, and Catholic Daughter member for over 25 years. She served on many committees, but most especially as the chairman of the “Cheer” committee. Over the years, Agnes sent many cards offering support, prayer, and sympathy to community members. Those that knew her well, knew of her love of baking and her close friendship with her “Executive Board Ladies.” She became a master of Facebook and Facetime video calls to maintain these friendships up until the end. She was honored to be selected as a Grand Marshall at one of the Christmas Parades.
Agnes is survived by her husband of 53 years, Charlie Ray Minks of East Bernard; daughter Patricia Minks Banse and husband Michael of East Bernard, son David Charles Minks and wife Susan, also of East Bernard; grandchildren Matthew James Banse, Alicia Marie Banse, Jacob David Minks, and Luke James Minks; sister Bridget Stunz and husband David and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Rita, brother Michael Mican and sister-in-law Betty Jo Mican.
Visitation will be on Thursday, April 15th, beginning at 5pm, followed by a rosary recited at 7pm. Funeral Mass and Rite of Committal will be held on Friday, April 16, 2021, at 10 am. All services located at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Entombment to be held at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in East Bernard.
