It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ann Tompkins, 91, of Wharton, who departed this life on February 2, 2025. She was born in Wharton on November 2, 1933, to the late Fred Johnston, Sr. and Leila Medsker Johnston.

Ann was a 1952 graduate of Wharton High School. She married W. W. “Buddy” Tompkins, III on September 12, 1953, and he preceded her in death in 2010. A cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, whose vibrant spirit and infectious laughter touched the lives of many. Ann will be remembered for her many passions. She had a profound appreciation for the timeless music of Elvis Presley and enjoyed the camaraderie of friends while playing Bridge and Mahjong. An accomplished springboard diver, Ann also found joy in the game of golf, activities that showcased both her competitive spirit and love for fun. As a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Ann fostered lifelong friendships and was deeply involved in her community, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing her. 

Ann is survived by her devoted sons, V.W. "Scooter" Tompkins IV, and wife, Brenda; of El Campo, and, Brian Tompkins, and wife, Kathleen of Wharton; as well as her beloved grandchildren: Linda McCain and husband, Aaron, V.W. “Jr” Tompkins V, Marla Tompkins, Seth Tompkins, Anthony Tompkins and wife, Genelle; great grandchildren, Conner, Kade, and Melody. Along with numerous nieces and nephews and close family friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, V.W. “Buddy” Tompkins III, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Pauline Nicholson, Peggy Williamson, Patty Wilkerson, Wayne Johnston, Darwin Johnston and Fred Johnston, Jr. 

Visitation preceding the service beginning at 9:00 AM. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Wharton Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton, TX. Serving as pallbearers are V.W. “Jr” Tompkins V, Anthony Tompkins, Seth Tompkins, and Aaron McCain. Honorary Pallbearers are her great grandsons Kade and Conner.

Ann Tompkins will be greatly missed, but her warmth and love will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. Funeral Services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at whartonfuneralhome.com
