Berta C. Garcia joined her husband, Nicolas, in heaven on July 27, 2024, at age 86. She was born July 12, 1938, in Rio Hondo, Texas, to Ignacio Cantu and his wife Cleotilde; 11 older siblings welcomed her. Berta spent many of her early years in the Rio Grande Valley, but her life eventually took her to Corpus Christi, Texas, where she married Nicolas Garcia on October 29, 1961. In 1962, she welcomed her daughter, Palmira, the first of five children.
In 1968, Berta moved with her young family to Wharton, Texas, where Nicolas was employed as a truck driver for H-E-B. As a driver's wife, Berta participated in the spouse driving competitions during the trucker rodeos held for the company drivers. When she was not behind the wheel, Berta was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic church. She participated in the choir and the Guadalupanas and helped with many parish events. Berta's nurturing and welcoming nature, evident in her love for collecting recipes and having friends and neighbors over for women’s prayer groups or afternoon coffee, touched the lives of many.
Berta was an avid reader and lifelong learner who took up many hobbies, including embroidery, sewing, and crocheting. All her children were lucky enough to be gifted one of her creations at one time or another. However, the greatest gift she bestowed upon those around her was the quick, subtle humor she delivered with a laugh and a flash of her beautiful smile. Her light-heartedness and joy were evident in the way she shared her humor. But above all, spending time with her grandchildren, or “grandma’s treasures,” as she would call them, brought Berta the most enjoyment.
Berta is preceded in death by her husband, Nicolas; her brothers Bartolo, Adelaido, Mucio, Ernesto, Ignacio, Juan, Jose, and Agustin; and her sisters Maria de Jesus, Guadalupe, and Maria. She is survived by her sister Cleotilde of Saginaw, Michigan. Berta is also survived by her children, daughters Palmira and Imelda of Wharton, Texas; her son Nicholas, his wife Yvette, daughter Racheal and sons Jonathan and Julian of Houston, Texas; daughter Velma Padron, husband Jose Lucas, and their son Diego of Rosenberg, Texas; daughter Chriselda and her son William Simmons, daughter Cecilia Simmons and Chriselda’s fiancé Jayme Holmes of Georgetown, Texas, as well and countless nieces and nephews who she loved very much.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Lindsey, Cassandra, Andrea, and Leslie of Angels Home Health and Birty, Natalie, Alison, J.E., and Kathy from Houston Hospice for the exceptional care and support they provided when it was most needed. Their dedication and compassion made a significant difference in Berta's final days.
