Dr. Raymond Turner Torp

August 20, 1931 — February 15, 2020

Dr. Raymond Turner Torp, 88, passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 15, 2020.  He was born on August 20, 1931 in Newark, New Jersey to the late Raymond Nelson Torp and Alice Theresa Turner Torp.

Raymond grew up in Elizabeth, N.J.  As a youngster he developed a love for photography, but decided he wanted a career in something that would help people. He also had a love for writing poetry.  After finishing graduate school at Upsala University in East Orange, N.J., he attended medical school at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa.  He graduated from medical school in 1957. He did his medical residency at three different hospitals., Bon Secours Hospital in Grosse Pointe, Michigan; Wayne County General Hospital in Eloise, Michigan and finally Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco, California.  It was at Kaiser, were doctor and nurses were beginning to implement CPR.  After 8 years in Michigan, he moved to Texas to a clinic in Big Spring.  Raymond moved to Wharton in January of 1973 from Big Spring to take a position with Outlar-Blair Clinic. In 1990, the doctors in Wharton formed South Texas Medical Clinic where he would work until his retirement in August 2001.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Paula Ann Johnson Torp,  daughters, Alison Marie Box and husband, Mike of Wharton and Kirsten May and husband, David of Katy; sons, William Nelson Torp and wife, Angela of Waco, Paul Francis Torp and wife, Michelle of Richmond and Raymond Johnson Torp and wife, Takako of Del Rio; grandchildren, Brianna Connick and husband, Jake, Cory Hirt and wife, Sarah, Travis Torp, Kayla Torp, Abigail May, Brandon Torp, Saharu Matsunori, Sae Matsunori and Morgan Box; great grandchild, Tsubasa Matsunori.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 starting at 5 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.   A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Bob Knippenberg officiating.  A Rite of Committal and burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
