Fred Louis Ermis, Jr., 81, of Wharton, TX, passed away on Tuesday evening, April 3, 2018 in a Houston hospital following a sudden illness. Fred was born on November 5, 1936, in Houston, Texas to the late Fred Louis and Mary Jane Janca Ermis. Following the death of his father, Fred and his mother moved to the Needville area after he completed the 5th grade. He graduated from Needville High School with the class of 1955. He married Beverly Ann DeRouen on August 30, 1958 in Stafford. She preceded him in death on July 7, 2011. Fred attended and graduated from Sam Houston State University and finished his education at Marquette University with a Master’s Degree. Mr. Ermis enjoyed teaching mathematics, logging more than 58 years in education of which the last 52 were at Wharton County Junior College. He loved the students and staff. During his extended teaching career, he even managed to teach multiple generations of families. Many times, over the years, he taught several generations of the same family. He also enjoyed working at his ranch, fishing, hunting, and collecting. He was a high school football referee for over 30 years. When school wasn’t in session, Fred could often be found on the bus trips to Coushatta. In addition to his parents and wife, Beverly; he was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Ermis and granddaughter, Grace Mary Ermis. Fred Ermis, Jr. is survived by his sons, Kenneth Ermis and wife, Christy of East Bernard, Keith Ermis and wife, Amy of Wharton, Kevin Ermis and wife, Lisa of Uvalde and Karl Ermis and wife, Jonna of El Campo, grandchildren, Kristi Gibson and husband, Jonathan, Kendylle Ermis, K.C. Ermis, Tommy Meehan, Kayci Sparkman and husband, Trey, Kelli Ermis, Kelby Ermis, Jillian Ermis and Olivia Ermis and great grandchildren, Kenna Gibson, Kenzi Gibson and Ford Sparkman. Visitation was held on Friday evening, April 6 starting at 5 p.m. at St Johns’ Catholic Church in Hungerford with a Holy Rosary recited at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 7 at 10 am with Father Charles Dwomoh officiating. The Rite of Committal and burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Rosenberg. Serving as pallbearers were Kenneth Ermis, Keith Ermis, Kevin Ermis, Karl Ermis, Jonathan Gibson, Kelby Ermis, and Kerry Brandl. Honorary pallbearers were Gene Bahnsen, David Slavik, Keith Adams, Wayne Waters, Jim Carolan, Kirby Pressley, Doug Walker, Dale Pinson, Harold Shilk and the faculty, staff and all his former students at WCJC.
