Hortensia Mata Severson

November 12, 1952 — May 5, 2019

Hortensia “Tea” Mata Severson

It is with great sadness that the family of Hortensia Mata Severson announces her passing on May 5, 2019 in a Houston area hospital, at the age of 66. She was born on November 12, 1952 in New Gulf, Wharton County, to the late Alice Becerra Mata and the late Catarino Mata. Sr.

Tea attended schools in the Wharton area. She attended Wharton County Junior College from 1982- 1984, receiving her Associates in Applied Science, Business Management. She continued her education at Capella University, Minneapolis, MN, where she received her Bachelor of Science-Business Management, Specialization in Accounting, in 2012. Tea then pursed her Master of Business Administration in Specialization Accounting, graduating in 2015. She was a member of Delta Mu Delta International Honors Society, which recognizes academic excellence. She loved the challenge of academics and higher education. She was employed by Modern Roofing as an Office Manager Bookkeeper for years. Known for her excellence to detail, under pressure, she maintained poise, with the gift to add humor in the moment.

Tea's faith in God was unwavering and lived by the golden rule, “loving others, as thyself." She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She had many kind friends and enjoyed making quality time for them. She enjoyed inspirational reading and music. Tea enjoyed doing crafts, especially on creating “tiny” dolls. She also liked movies, and when she could, taking a drive to the beach for the day.

Tea is survived by her children: Paul Anthony Gonzales of the Woodlands, Patrick Severson and wife, Caitlin, of Houston, sisters: Alicia Mata and husband, Patrick Prekurak, of Houston, Ella Mata of Rosenberg, Rebecca and husband, Alvin Bowers of Richmond, Lupe Mata of Wharton, Sylvia Broussard and husband, Mike of Groves, and one brother Catatino Mata, Jr., of Groves, and three grandchildren: Brendan Gonzales, Ryder Severson, Evelyn “Evie” Severson, and one great-grand child, Andrea Gonzales.

In addition to her parents, Tea is preceded in death by her brother, Frankie Becerra, her infant sister, Mary Jane Mata, and her nephew, Mark Mazur.

Visitation will be held on Friday May 10, 2019, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home, starting at 5:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of Tea's life at 7:00 p.m., with Pastor Dan Greer officiating.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at whartonfuneralhome.com
