John William Baker

September 19, 1937 — March 22, 2019

John William (Jay) Baker passed away in his home on March 22,2019, after a long battle with Parkinson’s and dementia. He was 81 years old. Born on September 19, 1937 to Woodrow W. Baker and wife Blanche (McNutt) Baker. Jay was raised in Houston, Texas by his mother and step-father Bob Fulton. Graduated from Spring Branch High School in 1956 and went to East Texas Baptist University and graduated in three years at 19 years old. While still in college he pastored small churches in the East Texas area. It was there he met and married Patricia Martin and they had two daughters. Later Jay went back and got his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Theological Seminary in May of 1968.He went on to pastor churches in Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi. He preached Bible Conferences here in the states and the Virgin Islands. Jay preached two weeks along the coast of South Africa down to Cape Town. He went on a three-week mission trip to Burma (Miramar). In 1986 he married Ronda Toney of San Antonio where they had a very successful Furniture and Interior Design business. He was interim pastor to several churches in that area. After he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and dementia they moved to Wharton where he lived until his death.He is survived by his wife Ronda and children;Charlotte and husband Kent MeadowsConnie and husband Ronnie ShafferDonna and husband Dennis CharletonRonald Toney and wife JasmineHe leaves many grandchildren and great grandchildren Brother Jimmie Bridges and wife Julia   A special thank you to his caregivers Juliet and Carrie who took such wonderful loving care of him while extending that care through prayer for his wellbeing. A memorial service will be held at Wharton Funeral Home located at 515 Boling Highway at 2:00 on March 24, 2019, after a private graveside service at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
