John N. McCain passed into the arms of the Lord on December 20, 2020 at El Campo Memorial Hospital. He was 102 years young. He was born in Cuero on February 15, 1918 to Wharton residents, the late Sallie Pearl and Joseph McCain.
John was a resident of Wharton growing up and a graduate of Wharton High School in 1935. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Master Sergeant in Patton’s 3rd Army. Upon returning from the war, he married the love of his life, Virginia (nee Cochran) in Rosenberg and they raised their children in West Columbia for 20 years. They then moved to Liberty, TX where they lived for 35 years. John worked as a foreman in the gas pipeline industry for 36 years until he retired in 1986. John returned to live in Wharton in a house he built on the same block where the house he grew up in still stands. He loved to travel and see new places. His children fondly remember how much he loved to serve others. He always looked out for his neighbors and if any of his neighbors were elderly or not able do it themselves, John would go around to their houses and place the garbage bins out in the morning and return them in the evening when he returned from work. John and his wife could always be counted on to take friends and neighbors, who could no longer drive, into Houston so they would make their doctor’s appointments.
John was a proud member of the American Legion Post #87 in Wharton where he helped out however he could, especially being a top fundraiser selling dinner plates. Also, John was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and he was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church which his parents helped found in Wharton.
John is survived by his children Gene and his wife Sheron of Corpus Christi, Peggy Roberts and her husband Ron of Eldridge, MO, and Sally Heurich and her husband Jimmy of San Antonio. He will also be dearly missed by his 10 Grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren and his 3 Great-Great Grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife, Virginia, his son, Tom and his grandson, John Heurich.
The family will be planning a memorial service (Or as John would say “A big party”) on what would be his 103rd birthday in February. Please check back on the Wharton Funeral Home website for details.
