Joyce Ann Riha Janik

Joyce Ann Riha Janik was born in Glen Flora, Texas to Edward Allen and Mary Kallina Riha on July 12, 1930.   In her early years, she enjoyed activities with her three brothers, playing the piano, loved cooking with her mother, and listening to Czech music. She attended Glen Flora and Crescent schools, lettered in volleyball, baseball, and tennis, was a Cheerleader and graduated in 1948.  She attended WCJC and graduated in 1950.  Joyce then went to Southwest Texas Teachers College, graduated in 1952 with a BS in Home Economics.  After graduation, she taught Home Economics in Van Vleck (52-54) and East Bernard from 1954 to 1960.  She married Edwin Edward Janik on November 24.1956 in Wharton, Texas.  After several years of marriage, Joyce and Edwin welcomed a son, Mark Allen. She left the school system to start a family and to follow Edwin, employed by Natural Gas Pipeline Co. on gas-related construction jobs in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.    Joyce and Edwin were also in business together as owners of Ed Riha Lumber Company in Glen Flora, Texas.  The business was open from 1969 until 2006.

Joyce was a sassy, spunky Czech woman, a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She was always willing to help out.  She was an assistant scout leader, active in the Catholic church bazaars, and CDA.  Joyce and Edwin enjoyed serving as a host family for a number of visitors from the Czech Republic.  She gave her time, efforts and energies to her family and cherished the times with her grandsons.  She also loved their dog, Lucky. She was always well organized, handy, intuitive, and a good sister and friend.  She enjoyed Czech music and dancing, always liked cooking, sewing, collecting recipes and assembling several cookbooks, craft projects, late-night talk shows, movies, and documentaries, researching family genealogy and spending time with her family. She faced many health challenges in her life but continued to power through and kept her faith to enjoy the time that she had with her family.

For the last few years, Joyce was a resident at Brookdale Assisted Living in Houston and enjoyed family visits, participating in craft and decorating projects and listening to musicians that came to play the piano and sing with their guitars.

Memorial donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Holy Cross Catholic Church Scholarship Fund. The family of Joyce Janik would like to extend our sincere thank you for all of the prayers and acts of love and kindness.  A special thanks to all of the Caregivers and Hospice Associates at Brookdale for taking such good care of Joyce.
